Job Description

The Project Manager leads the execution of large-scale capital investment projects for a premier global pharmaceutical manufacturer in Durham, NC. You take full operational ownership of the project lifecycle from concept development through commissioning and final handover. Your mission ensures that facility expansions and technical upgrades maximize manufacturing capacity while strictly adhering to schedule, budget, and global regulatory standards. You act as the core connection point between multidisciplinary engineering teams, external contractors, and senior corporate stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct large-scale capital investment projects across multiple manufacturing platforms and regions.
  • Formulate and execute project delivery plans that balance cost, schedule, quality, and business objectives.
  • Oversee budgeting, equipment recapitalization, and long-term CapEx forecasting across the engineering portfolio.
  • Prepare comprehensive project initiation documents, including scope definitions, cost estimates, master schedules, and risk logs.
  • Review and approve design activities to ensure complete alignment with corporate standards and industry regulations.
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and contract negotiation for external engineering firms, equipment vendors, and contractors.
  • Supervise on-site construction execution, enforce rigorous health and safety programs, and lead site safety reviews.
  • Perform detailed constructability assessments, technical evaluations, and quality gates throughout project delivery.
  • Develop and execute commissioning, qualification, and validation (CQV) plans to ensure a seamless transition to live operations.
  • Provide engineering documentation and support for regulatory inspections, internal audits, and energy optimization initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to cross-functional engineering teams and project stakeholders.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience managing capital construction projects and engineering portfolios.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working directly within a regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
  • Deep understanding of project controls, stage-gate budgeting, scheduling tools, and quality assurance workflows.
  • Strong working knowledge of Environment, Health, and Safety (HSE) requirements and GxP/FDA quality compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional teams and managing tier-1 external engineering and construction resources.
  • Fluent in English with the ability to travel to global sites as required by project milestones.
